How to Refill Windshield Wiper Fluid

Windshield Wiper Fluid

There are two main ways to know that your windshield wiper fluid needs replacing as you drive around Minneapolis: you’ll have a windshield fluid light blinking on your dashboard or you’ll try to use your wiper fluid to find it won’t spray. Either way, you’ll know it’s time for a refill! Learn all about how to refill windshield wiper fluid, where to put it, and how to use it with the service team at Land Rover Richfield.

What is Windshield Wiper Fluid?

Windshield wiper fluid is a special cleaning agent that has been specifically designed to clean your vehicle’s windshield glass. The fluid is usually composed of methanol or ethanol for cleaning purposes, and a small amount of ethylene glycol to prevent it from freezing at temperatures as low as -20 degrees.

That said, not all wiper fluid is the same. Stroll down to our parts department and you’ll find a variety of wiper fluids specially designed for summer, winter, or all-season. Depending on how and when you drive your vehicle around St. Paul, you may find that one of these specific wiper fluids, like a rain-repellant or antifreeze formulation, may be best suited for the temperature fluctuations and climate conditions your vehicle drives in.

How to Use Windshield Wiper Fluid

As you drive around Edina, you’ll start to notice buildup on your windshield. Once you start having streaks or difficulty seeing specifics out in front of you, it’s time to use your windshield wiper fluid. Most vehicles have a button or a position to pull the windshield wiper lever to release wiper fluid. The wiper blades begin to wipe automatically once the fluid has been sprayed, but may need a few more manually-triggered wipes to clear the debris.

If the wiper fluid doesn’t get rid of all the streaking, it may be time to clean the interior of your windshield. For this job, don’t use windshield wiper fluid– normal glass cleaner or rubbing alcohol will do the trick.

Where to Put Windshield Wiper Fluid

The first part of knowing how to refill windshield wiper fluid is knowing where to put it! When your wiper fluid dash light comes on or your wiper fluid isn’t spraying, follow these steps to refill your wiper fluid:

  1. Find out where to put windshield wiper fluid in your vehicle. You can check your owner’s manual for the exact location or you can look for the translucent container under your hood that will have the windshield wiper symbol on it.
  2. Once you’ve located the reservoir, remove the cap and check the fluid level.
  3. Carefully pour your windshield wiper fluid into the reservoir, keeping an eye on the fill line marked on the container. Once it reaches the fill line, stop. For an easier pour and reduced splashing, consider using a funnel.
  4. Put the reservoir cap back on and close the hood. Hop behind the wheel and test that your wiper fluid is now spraying appropriately.
