How to Get Ice Off a Windshield Without a Scraper

How to Get Ice Off Your Windshield

If you’re a native Minneapolis driver, then you know firsthand how driving in the winter can be. There’s nothing more frustrating than waking up and going to start your car, only to find that your windshield is covered with ice. To remove the ice efficiently, check out our guide from the service center at Land Rover Richfield on how to get ice off a windshield without a scraper, so you can be prepared on even the coldest of winter mornings.

Different Ways to Get Ice Off a Windshield Without a Scraper

If you have an ice scraper, then firmly apply pressure on your windshield to remove any ice. However, if you don’t have an ice scraper, then there are some DIY methods you can use to remove the ice from your windshield, so you can see clearly before you hit the Minneapolis roads. Here are some different ways to get ice off a windshield if you don’t happen to have an ice scraper:

Warm Water

Using warm water is a quick and easy way to get ice off a windshield without a scraper. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Fill a bucket or something similar with warm water, but make sure it’s not boiling hot as this can damage your windshield.
  2. Start from the top of your windshield, and pour the water downwards.
  3. The ice should melt almost instantaneously.

De-Icing Spray

This method is perfect for when you have a light layer of ice built up on your windshield. To remove ice from your windshield with de-icing spray, perform the following steps:

  1. Make your own spray by mixing three parts vinegar and one part water.
  2. You can also make your own spray by mixing two parts rubbing alcohol and one part water.
  3. Turn your car on and set the defroster on, so that the inside of the car can begin to warm up.
  4. Spray the windshield with the de-icing spray, and wait about 15-30 seconds for the ice to melt.
  5. Wipe off any remaining ice with a brush now that the ice should be melted or soft.

Credit Card

This may be an unconventional method, but most credit cards are thin enough to function almost like an ice scraper and work well in a pinch. Here’s how to get ice off your windshield with a credit card:

  1. Start your car to warm up its interior.
  2. With your credit card, scrape the light frost at about a 30-degree angle.
  3. Start scraping at the bottom since the ice will be the loosest there, and then work your way up towards the top.
