There are many reasons why a check engine light might be flashing. So, before you even begin to reset the check engine light, you first need to make sure that the issue has been resolved. Take a Look at the Gas Cap

Before you reset your check engine light, be sure to take one final look at the gas cap. Sometimes, a loose gas cap can cause your vehicle’s check engine light to come on. To check your gas cap, make sure you park your vehicle on the side of the road if you’re driving around St. Paul or in your own garage. Then, take your gas cap off, and put it back on. Sometimes, this simple action will reset the check engine light automatically.

How to Reset Your Check Engine Light From Your Garage

Once you’ve determined that the original issue that caused your check engine light to come on has been resolved, you can then begin resetting the check engine light. The process can be performed from your own home or garage in a few simple steps. Here’s how to reset your check engine light:

1. Be sure that you have on safety glasses and gloves.
2. Turn off your vehicle’s ignition.
3. Locate the negative terminal in your vehicle. Usually, the negative terminal will have a black cap or negative symbol. Consult your owner’s manual if you have trouble locating the negative terminal.
4. Once you find the negative terminal on your vehicle, use a wrench to loosen the nut on the negative terminal.
5. Once the nut on the negative terminal is loose, pull the negative connector from the battery.
6. Keep the connector to the side for about 30-60 seconds.
7. After 30-60 seconds, reconnect the negative cable, and be sure to use your wrench to make sure that it’s tight.
